Organic cotton for your kids

We at Sones are passionate about organic cotton as you will probably have realised if you have checked out our website. You may wonder why it is that wearing organic cotton next to the skin is great for your kids. Is it worth paying a small price premium?
Well to put it quite simply it’s healthier. Not only for your own health and the health of your children but for the communities where cotton is grown and very importantly the environment. Organic cotton clothing uses cotton that is grown without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, insecticides, chemical fertilizers or any other chemicals, other safer more labour intensive methods are used to produce the crops hence the small price premium. Workers have better working conditions when they are not exposed to toxic chemicals, water quality is not compromised by run-off into the water table, and the soil is strong and healthy so its better for local wildlife and animals too. Organic farming practices have a lower carbon footprint as the entire process consumes much less fuel and energy and produces fewer greenhouse gases. The end product is a soft and pure cotton fabric that is toxin free.
Organic cotton fabric lasts much longer before it begins to wear down and will wash and wash. This is because the cotton fibres are longer and stronger than conventionally produced cotton which is scoured, bleached, dyed, softened, treated with formaldehyde and flame and soil retardants. Organic fabrics are hypoallergenic and absorb moisture from our bodies in a more efficient way than non organic materials so they are great for sensitive skin.
In babies, the dermis – the outer layer of the skin that protects the body from mechanical stress and temperature change–is up to 20-30% thinner than in normal adults and their immune system is still developing. This makes baby’s skin less resilient and more susceptible to absorbing bacteria and harmful substances in the environment especially if it’s irritated.Babies sweat less efficiently than the rest of us, so it’s much more difficult for them to maintain their body temperature, Mum has to help out with that! All this means that children are at greater risk of pesticide-related health problems than adults.
Helping to preserve and take care of our environment is of growing importance to many parents. Children are exposed to pollutants in so many aspects of modern life so choosing organic fibres is one step towards natural and safe living
