Why we should buy from small businesses

In times of recession small businesses are struggling to survive, but unless we want to see the retail industry taken over by a few Multi Nationals who will have the ability to control prices and dictate what we want to buy we need to support small businesses. These businesses often operate from home, produce their own items locally, and generally have a smaller footprint on the earth. By consciously purchasing products from small businesses, you are acting locally, yet thinking globally.

In these days branding seems to be everything. I am often amazed when people come to craft fairs and expect to buy everything for pennies and yet will go to a big glitzy shop and buy something mass produced of inferior quality for twice as much. Is it the power of huge advertising budgets? Would you prefer to buy a plastic toy from a multi national or something beautifully made from sustainable wood? Handmade organic skincare or mass produced skincare with expensive packaging and multiple chemicals?

Here are some excellent reasons for buying from small businesses –
- Customer service – Small businesses really want your custom and are willing to go the extra mile to get that business; you are not just a faceless consumer.
- Individuality – No corporate rules but personal service and often quirky ideas that are exciting and different. It’s no coincidence that the best motorway service station in the country is privately owned.
- Innovative – Have you looked at some of the fabulous products out there? It is completely untrue that it is cheaper to buy from large stores there are loads of bargains to be found in small businesses and they need your custom. You can get an individual look for all the family without spending a fortune.
- Helping local economies – Have you noticed how small villages are dying because everybody goes to huge warehouses out of town. Using small businesses helps create jobs and stimulates the local economy.
- Encouraging Enterprise- Why not encourage the creative talent that is out there and in the long run we can all benefit.
