Some thoughts on deodorants

Have you ever thought about the ingredients in your deodorant perhaps looked at what is listed in the small print? Deodorant is usually applied following a bath or shower when the skin is at its most vulnerable probably slightly damp and with pores open so there is a good chance of absorption. Body odours are created by the billions of bacteria which live on our skin where they quite happily feed on sweat and other organisms. Unfortunately the by product of this feeding activity is body odour. Deodorants often work by creating a chemical film over the skin which is either acidic or salty its effect is to eliminate the bacteria by creating an unfriendly environment.

One of the main ingredients found in many deodorants is aluminium oxide which works by plugging the pores and preventing sweat and toxins from escaping. There have been suggestions that ingredients such as aluminium in deodorants may increase the risk of breast cancer, but this is by no means clinically proven although it has been suggested that further research is necessary so the matter is still under discussion. Quite a few scare stories are to be found on the internet and there is a list of ingredients commonly found in deodorants that are probably best avoided such as – Parabens (methyl, ethyl, propyl, benzyl and butyl), triclosan, talc, propylene glycol, silica, and steareth-n. Of course you will find other articles which totally refute any possibility of harm from these ingredients (possibly from the same Multi National companies that sell products containing the above).

One answer is to use only products that you know are free of these chemical nasties and some people find natural crystal deodorants effective. Live Native have produced two premium quality enzyme active deodorants that are totally natural and highly effective but do not work by clogging the pores. Easy to use and unlike many deodorants they will not sting when applied after shaving. They are Citrus Fresh and Essential Woman both priced at £13.80 for 50ml.
