“Breast is best” is what we constantly hear from health professionals and 90% of the worlds Mothers would probably agree but it can be tricky if baby is desperate for a feed and you are out somewhere. There still seems to be a very strange attitude in our society which sees breast feeding as something you should do at home but try telling that to a hungry crying baby when you are out and about. Even more perverse it seems that it is perfectly ok to reveal breasts at any other time just not when they are performing their natural function. A survey undertaken in 2009 showed that the UK is not a particularly breast feeding friendly place and I don’t think things have changed much since then. It should be every woman’s right to breast feed without feeling awkward or embarrassed but not everybody feels comfortable about it. Interestingly in the afore mentioned survey a staggering 65% of respondents when asked why they were not breast feeding said that they felt too self conscious about people staring.
It’s all very well knowing that society needs to change it’s attitudes but in the meantime if you are one of those women who are not comfortable it is better to find a solution rather than giving up breast feeding. There are all sorts of health benefits to both you and your baby if you continue to breastfeed.
Bubbalugs bamboo nursing shawls are an eco friendly way of feeling more confident breast feeding when you are out in public. They are soft with a feel like cashmere and look elegant and stylish even when you are out without the baby so you can continue to use your shawl when you finish breast feeding. They are priced at £30.00 one size will fit all and come in two lengths standard and long and four colours.
