I thought I would get here early again today as this is not turning into one of my better days! I am off to Glasgow on Thursday as I'm sure you are probably sick of hearing about by now! But this morning disaster struck! A very good friend of mine was planning to fly to Inverness tomorrow to come with me to the show to help but unfortunately her husband is unwell in hospital and she is unable to come. I am so sorry that he is unwell and of course her place is with him. I must admit to feeling pretty devastated about my own situation as well how on earth could I manage on my own?. Fortunately another friend has stepped into the breach phew!!

Apparently it's cloth nappy week so I have put in a few tips to help minimise energy use
  • Use A rated washing appliances I know they are more expensive but could end up saving you money in the long run.
  • Wash soiled nappies at 60 degrees not 90 this is quite adequate.
  • If nappies are just wet they can be washed at 40 degrees with other laundry
  • Always wash used nappies in a full load
  • Nappy wraps need only be washed periodically. Air dry betwen uses. In fact washing them too often will reduce their waterproof properties.
  • Use an eco wash liquid or powder and don't use fabric softener as this will reduce the absorbancy of your nappies. Alternatively use Eco balls.
  • Air dry rather than tumble dry whenever possible. Tumble drying will reduce the absorbancy of your nappies.
  • Use washable liners as opposed to disposable liners when ever possible. You can buy stay dry liners
  • Avoid PVC, try and use organic or unbleached products
  • Never iron nappies or wraps
  • Pass your nappies on when you have finished with them, or buy second hand items.
  • Try to  avoid throwaway wipes when possible.
  • When your child is potty training use washable trainer pants. They are easy to use and a great alternative to disposable ones.
Well that is the end of my tips I hope they will be useful

Re: Cloth Nappy Tips    By Mairi Rivers on 28/04/2008 13:33
Great tips Linda!

However I usually wash my nappies at only 40 degrees even if they had poo in them. I very occasionally do a 60 degree wash if I really think they need it.

I recently found that I was getting really stinky nappies even when there was only a tiny pee in them and found that this can be caused by too much washing powder building up on the nappies. So I put them through a 60 degree wash with no powder and now use half the amount of powder that I used to, and alternate washes with powder and soapnuts which are another great eco friendly way to wash. And amazingly the smell has gone.
