What a glorious day! I decided to play truant from the kitchen where I had loads of cooking lined up and go for a tramp with the dogs.

We headed out of Lairg towards a small village called Rosehall on the way is a forestry track that I haven't been on before. Now I'm afraid I have to wax lyrical here. It was so beautiful with blue sky and green in any direction you cared to look. The path was quite steep but I thought it must be good for the buttocks! (I'm a bit of a pear). We saw loads of frog spawn in the pools along the way and several curlew and even a beastie. OK so it wasn't exactly the Monarch of the Glen just a wee girly but hey. As we got higher there were beautiful views of rolling hills and mountains with snow on the top. Little burns were tumbling down the hillside over the rocks. We didn't see a soul up there and eventually came to a small bothy built of rock with a turf roof at this point we decided to turn back. Shula found a peat bog and liberally covered herself so that made her day! I'm afraid all that walking worked up an appetite so I had a piece of simnel cake when I got back which would have put back all the calories I managed to burn off.

I was reading an article today about how having kids forces parents to rethink their views of the world we live in  how we treat it and the food we eat. Whilst this is probably true of some parents  it's a bit of a generalisation. But it would be great if it were true of everybody wouldn't it?

There are however definitely changes afoot I think. A few years ago when my children went to play school snacks were biscuits. Now it's accepted that healthy snacks like fruit are so much better for children and there are great efforts to provide school meals that don't consist of chips etc. Apart perhaps from the lady who posted fish and chips into the school playground because her kids didn't like healthy food! People are talking about conserving energy and recycling and nearly everybody  is making some sort of effort. Have you heard about Earth Hour you can visit www.earthhour.org for details but basically we should all turn off lights and unnecessary appliances between 8pm and 9pm tonight.  We are going out tonight but have you got plans to switch off?
