Well here I am again! I have been busy again putting some of the new clothes in the shop and sorting out pictures and so on. If you would like to look at some of the new clothes go to

I have a couple of things I wanted to share with you today. Firstly I was looking at tips on recycling and there were on or two interesting idea's you can wash and  reuse the inner waxed bag in cereal packets for packaging sandwiches or even packing fruit and vegetables into at the supermarket to save using plastic bags. Another idea is to make a notice board from corks this comes courtesy of  www.junkk.com

There was an interesting article in the Soil Association newsletter about eco tips. Obviously we buy local produce if possible to save energy from transporting goods but it is not that simple. Unless what you buy is in season then it has probably been forced in a greenhouse or kept chilled so something to think about there. If you want to buy exotic fruit etc the most earth friendly way is to buy produce in season from wherever it is grown. Another point made is why in Scotland when so much lamb is produced are the shops stocking so much New Zealand lamb? So many questions? Any answers out there? I had a really interesting reply from Mairi yesterday when I was talking about plastic carrier bags check it out. By the way apparently you can crochet with plastic bags instructions on the craftycraftyblog.
So food for thought I think.

When we moved to Switzerland we started buying all our fruit and veg from the market. If something important (usually you can get peppers, oranges and bananas any time) is not in season or not grown in Switzerland then they do import it, but generally from no further than Spain. On the whole though, most produce comes from within Switzerland. However I now find it much easier to see what was really in season and what isn't.

The organic section in our local supermarket back in Scotland always had exactly the same things in it: peppers (3 in a plastic bag), mushrooms, courgettes, potatoes, carrots, broccoli and tomatoes, in fact all of it was plastic wrapped at the very least. There was usually some sort of lettuce too. But you had to look closely at the packet to see where the produce came from, and so often it was not even from Europe.

I think the UK could learn a thing or two about using more local or at least European food and stop importing things from outside Europe. Perhaps I'll let them off with bananas though!

In Switzerland the main ingredients in products have to be labelled with country of origin, even meat in takeaways. I think people in the UK would be shocked at how little is produced locally and some sort of labelling like in Switzerland might spur people into action.

I find it so annoying that vegetables in the supermarket are individually wrapped. I suppose it's to protect them and make them last longer. You are spot on about super markets in Scotland Mairi. I would love to have a local market that I could buy from. I hope that I will be able to really get my garden going this year although last year wasn't too bad my tatties were lovely!
