Just back from walking the dogs its a lovely blustery day here the sort of day that the midges hate! I have been having a fairly laid back sort of day put a couple of new items into the shop this morning and packed a parcel up.

Anyway here are the latest additions. Mobiles, they are Fairtrade from Lanka Kade and made from MDF board I have a Farm mobile which is bright and coulourful for babies and small children, and a Butterfly mobile which is very pretty and would enhance a little girls bedroom or playroom. I should point out that they are not toys and should be out of reach of very small children.

I notice in the newspapers that Paul McCartney has been getting a lot of stick for his idea of having a meatless Monday to try and reduce greenhouse gas emmisions. I can't see why he should be critiscised for this idea its something that I have advocated on the blog before although I was thinking more in terms of health than emmisions. I found this information which applies to America but I don't think the situation is so different here-

"70 percent of US corn and soy production is devoted to feed, not food, and not fuel…According to the FAO and the USDA , US meat consumption has increased 137 pounds per person since the 1950s, with a resulting increase in grain usage of 375 pounds per person (the grain fed to cattle and poultry). Cheese consumption has increased faster than milk’s decline, and Americans consume 179 extra pounds of milk, which uses up another 63 pounds of grain.  In short, dietary change in the US has resulted in an additional 438 pounds of grains per capita, or 8 bushels of corn".

Our increased consumption of meat and dairy products go some way to explaining the obesity problem which is found in the western world. Recently I went on a couple of study days run by dieticians and have to admit that I was shocked to hear that a single ideal sized portion of meat per person is in the region of 4oz. I cannot imagine that many of us would consider that sufficient. Although meat is rich in protein and iron etc it also contains a high percentage of saturated fats so having one or even two meatless days is a good idea in my humble opinion. So stop having a go at Paul he has a point!
