Stop press! Two of the feathered houdini's managed to get out of the run today for the first time. For those who are new to this blog I am referring to my chickens who were the scourge of my garden constantly escaping from their run and trashing the vegetables and flowers eating all in their path. A couple of months ago they got a new run and peace has reined until today. I shall have to check the perimeters I've obviously become too complacent!
I have been itching today from midge bites and thinking about my new article and in the course of my research (and itching) thought about eczema which I used to suffer from. While the precise cause of eczema is unclear it seems to be a hyperactive response from the immune system to an irritant. Frequently occuring with allergies and often with a family history. Elimination of known triggers is an important factor in symptom management.
Some Common Eczema Triggers
Climate change, especially if exposed to strong winds or heat.
Water especially hard water.
Soaps, bubble bath, detergents, cosmetics, perfume.
Pollen, pet hair, dust.
Stress and anxiety.
Synthetic or wool fibres.
Certain chemicals, alkali's, solvents
Sweating
Colds flu or infections of any kind
The commonest type of eczema is atopic eczema which signifies a general over sensitivity to an irritant this type has been linked to asthma and hay fever. Contact dermatitis is where the skin is in direct contact with substances that create irritation such as detergents, oil etc. A further type is caused by an allergic reaction to something such as rubber, nickel,or cosmetics. Infantile eczema often affects young babies, and
is caused by moisture from drool or inflammation of the scalp (cradle cap).
I wrote an earlier article in which I questioned whether organic cotton may be helpful for people suffering from eczema particularly children. I have not been able to find any research on this although cotton is definitely recommended to wear against the skin but there are anecdotal accounts from mums who have found it to be helpful. It makes sense because all the chemicals used in cotton production are avoided by wearing organic.
What do you think about this? I would love to hear from any mums who have found it helpful to change to organic clothing.
Linda
