Another lovely day here, I have been doing my duty at the Art and Craft show stewarding but it has been very slow, everybody must be in the garden enjoying the sunshine. While the sun is shining it shows up all the dust and dirt which is under wraps in the winter and udoesn't get noticed. So here are a few idea's to clean your house without using loads of chemicals.

Living Room
 Dusting: When picking
up dust use a damp cloth.  A dry cloth only stirs up the allergens.
Furniture Polish:  Mix Olive Oil and vinegar in a 1:1 ratio and polish with a soft cloth. (I think any oil and lemon juice would be good substitutes.)
Windows:  Mix 3 tablespoons of vinegar per 1 quart of water in a spray bottle.  For extra dirty windows use a mixture of ½ teaspoon of liquid soap, 3 tablespoons vinegar and 2 cups of water, and shake well.  Use newspaper instead of paper towels to wipe window.  This will create a streak-free glass.
Floors and Carpet:
Linoleum:  Use ¼ cup washing soda (also known as sodium carbonate) with 1 tablespoon of liquid soap, ¼ cup vinegar and 2 gallons hot water.  Put the washing soda in the bucket first and add the liquid ingredients; that way the soda won’t splash out.   Do not use the formula on waxed floors.
Disinfect Floors:  Add 2 gallons of hot water to ½ cup of borax.  Put the borax in bucket first, and then add water slowly to avoid splashing.
Wood Floors:  Add 1 cup white spirit vinegar per bucket of hot water.
Carpets and Rugs:  Sprinkling baking soda over the surface of the carpet can help eliminate odors.  Let stand for 15 to 30 minutes before vacuuming.

I hope that some of these tips will be helpful it's certainly a lot cheaper than conventional products. So many of the cleaning products that are seen in the shops are not really needed we are seduced by advertising.

Re: Cleaning using natural ingredients    By Nik on 26/05/2008 21:12
Dear Linda,
I have just bought a fantastic set of microfibre cleaning cloths from Minky. They are comprised of three cloths, one for all glass and granite surfaces, one for polishing, dusting and cleaning the other for scouring (on one side) the other side for washing up and wiping down. They are effective on their own with no cleaning products except water and they are machine washable (do not use fabric conditioner) they are the most brilliant cleaning system that I have ever used.
