Sunday and family lunch
Linda's Highland Blog By Linda on 11/05/2008 15:01
Another week gone by we have had my parents staying and they are going home on wednesday and it seems to have flown. Our new chicken house is in position and we just have to get some wire to finish off the run. Douglas and Sian and the children are coming for dinner and there is a huge leg of lamb in the oven. Sunday much as it is for countless homes across the land no doubt.

I have been reading rather an amusing blog about how Hollywood stars are falling over themselves to prove their green credentials. Take Sean Penn, who's just got back from a trip on a biodiesel bus (he obviously doesn't realise that biodiesel is plummeting on the barometer of eco-cool). His 'Dirty Hands Caravan' was a sort of feelgood A-Team, stopping to build houses for the homeless, clean up parks and do whatever it took to make the world a better place.Harrison Ford in a bold move has apparently had his chest waxed to raise awareness of deforestation??

Ever eager to raise their rugrats the rig ...

Time of reckoning for the feathered Houdini's
Linda's Highland Blog By Linda on 10/05/2008 16:06
I always seem to start this blog by telling you what a busy day I've had and sorry to be boring but today is no exception. Shula had her obedience class this morning she only has one more session before she takes her bronze certificate test and is doing really well. Then we went to try to buy some chicken wire but  nobody seemed to have what we wanted so thats a job for Monday. My chickens are exceptional escapologists as I have mentioned before so we need really high wire.

It's the time of reckoning for the feathered houdini's their new shed arrived this afternoon and they are being relocated and having a SECURE run. Peter and my father have cleared a large area of the accumulation of years of rubbish and my job was to move the composter out of the way, which was heavy going with maximum help from the two dogs who thought it was snack time! I dug the compost from the bottom into my vegetable patch and replaced the newer stuff back into the bin. I have also begun sowing and got a c ...

Baby Days!
Linda's Highland Blog By Linda on 09/05/2008 16:59
Another warm and sunny day here. Everywhere looks beautiful and the lambs seem to be enjoying the sunshine they seem to lie out sun bathing. Nobody has told them about slip slop slap! I have spent another day in Rogart helping with the new baby Tristan and Jacob his big brother. I feel quite tired at the moment I'd forgotten what it was like having an excited two year old charging around all day. I spent the morning crawling in and out of Jacob's play house.

I was reading a very thoughtful blog today about how every season we choose our clothes by what is trendy rather than ethical the author says that she has always had an awareness of clothes and where they come from but her ethics  have tended to go by the board depending how much she coveted the item in question. Which one of us can honestly say that we have not done the same at some time? We need to consider the following aspects when it comes to our fashion decisions: Where were our clothes made? In which conditions? Was the ...

What a lovely boy!
Linda's Highland Blog By Linda on 08/05/2008 14:50
It has been a beautiful hot and sunny day here and I went to spend the day with Sian and Jacob and my new grandson Tristan. He is gorgeous with a cap of black hair, very contented and feeding well. I may be slightly biased here but not much I assure you. Jacob has come round to the idea of having a baby brother and is looking foward to showing him all the things he can do because he is a big boy!

I took several little outfits from my stock and Tristan looked really cute in a kimono top and pants. Jacob has been very excited all day and I am ready now to sink into a chair with a glass of wine. Peter is cooking tonight bless him. Since I have spent much of the day crawling in and out of play houses and helping with housework I feel pretty tired. I would really like to hear from any o ...

Ooch!
Linda's Highland Blog By Linda on 07/05/2008 16:38
The title just about sums up how I am feeling at present I have just returned from having a molar removed. I won't give you the gory details but suffice to say it feels like I've had a punch in the jaw and it's ringing.

I was reading a very thoughtful and interesting blog today about the inconsistencies we face when trying to buy ethically produced goods. Some people might be more interested in a companies human rights record and others priority is animal rights for example and the two are not necessarily compatible in the same companies. A company who treats it's producers badly might treat it's factory workers very well so do you boycott the product and put those people who need their wages out of work?I suppose this leads us back to the old adage you can please some of the people most of the time but you can't please everybody all of the time(Have I got that right sorry my brain is a bit fuddled). So I guess what I'm saying is you have to pick your cause and go with it because the world ...

Safe Delivery!
Linda's Highland Blog By Linda on 06/05/2008 14:32
Congratulations to my son Douglas and daughter in law Sian following the birth of their son last night. He weighed in at 9lb 11oz I can't wait to see him. He hasn't been named as yet but I may be getting more news when the proud dad and big brother gets back from the hospital.

It's been another glorious day here but I have been pretty housebound cooking and cleaning my parents are coming to stay tomorrow so it's all happening in our family at the moment.

Some more tips for you about energy saving.
  • Cut down on the amount of washing you do and forget about ironing those wrinkles are your statement that you are green and proud! Anyway you will be covering them with jumpers to keep warm with the central heating turned down or off.
  • Avoid washing just one plate and certainly not under a running tap! Teenagers take heed!
  • Take a shower not a bath but if you don't have a shower recycle the bathwater t ...

Bank Holiday Monday
Linda's Highland Blog By Linda on 05/05/2008 12:18
Phew an exhausting day I'm completely wrecked! Gorgeous sunshine here today and really warm we went for a hike to a glen with a gaelic name sorry can't spell it near Rosehall which is about 10 miles from here. It was wonderful we walked alongside a river loads of beasties and birds and not a soul to be seen. Next time we go we will take lunch but it will have to be soon otherwise the midges will have arrived in force! Talking of the sun have you seen our cute sunhats? They are really practical with a nice wide brim and ties under the chin to help them stay on and come in several colours they coordinate with dress and bloomers and dungarees in the summer brights range.. Just the thing for the li ...

Sunday- Day of rest lol
Linda's Highland Blog By Linda on 04/05/2008 08:41
Hello again from the far north. I have been busy today getting ready to plant my tatties, I had forgotten what hard work it is especially when you have a large tree nearby with roots like triffyds!! I now have an aching back but not a single tattie is planted yet. It didn't help that Shula expects to be entertained with her ball as you try and dig and a chicken was practically on the end of the fork looking for worms! Anyway enough of my moans.

I wanted to tell you about a new site which I found today called www.safecosmetics.org Its all about a campaign for safe cosmetics free of chemicals. My interest was in the products made for babies which I think is an absolute minefield for parents. New advice to parents is that they really don't need the products that are regularly bought shampoo, lotions and powders have been linked to possible reproductive problems. It is suggested that if you use anything it should be phthalate free ...

Saturday already where did the week go?
Linda's Highland Blog By Linda on 03/05/2008 15:57
Is it an age thing that time flys by so quickly? I can't believe that I was in Glasgow this time last week. Contrary to the weather forecast we have had a lovely warm day today. Shula went to her obedience class and did really well I was quite proud of her. We then went for a walk with Minnie as well along the foreshore at Cromarty firth a walk made in heaven for Shula as there is loads of swimming. Sian's baby still hasn't arrived. I hope something happens this weekend it's horrible waiting for the last couple of weeks isn't it? A day seems like forever.

I am planning to plant my seed potatoes tomorrow I know it's late for the south but I have learn't that up here in the north it has to be later because we can still get some prety fierce frosts even into May. I am going to be picking our first rhubarb tomorrow lovely!

I was interested to read some comments made by 'Labour behind the label' re M&S acknowledging that they have done a great deal on environmental iss ...

Did you see this on TV last night?
Linda's Highland Blog By Linda on 02/05/2008 15:11
beautiful warm sunny morning and a wet miserable afternoon. We have found that you really have to try and enjoy the weather when it's there and today is certainly a case in point. Accordingly I took the dogs out this morning and we had a lovely walk. I have spent the afternoon so far baking oh the joys of working from home!

Did any body watch a programme on Beeb 3 last night about English kids working in an Indian sweatshop? It was really interesting, obviously a bit set up for us viewers but nevertheless I did feel that the young people involved had their eyes opened a bit to how the other half lives. There was one young man obviously intelligent and confident who could not understand why the people working in such awful conditions did not try to get educated and better themselves. As the programme went on he began to understand that not everybody in life has choices. One man he spoke to worked from 9 in the morning until 10 or 12 at night for a pittance. When was he going to be able to go ...
