Simple is sometimes best
By Linda on 27/07/2009 13:32

Monday again already where do the weeks go? I have been trying to establish some sort of order in the house today so its a relief to sit down at the computer.

I may have mentioned before that I have been having some real problems with dry skin recently so I thought I would share with you a couple of things that I have discovered. Firstly plain and simple almond oil is brilliant for cleansing the skin without drying it out. I have been applying it with the fingertips and then using cotton pads from purenuffstuff to wipe off with warm water. I can throughly recommend the cotton pads no more cotton wool for me! take a look and see what you think.

Multiple purpose tomato sauce.
By Linda on 25/07/2009 15:47

Just back from yet another walk with the dogs and I have been thinking about what to talk about today. About two or three weeks ago I got a brilliant recipe from the paper and I thought I would share it with you. Its a multi purpose tomato sauce lovely to have with pasta with some parmesan and great as a pizza base. With the addition of a few black olives its a lovely sauce to use with baked fish just put some over the fish and cook for about half an hour in a moderate oven. I froze it in cartons so its ready for use as a really inexpensive base ingredient lots of other uses as well I'm sure.

So here it is-

1  and a half oz Demerara sugar

5 tbsps Red wine vinegar

1 tbsp Olive oil

1 Large onion finely chopped

2 Fat cloves of garlic finely chopped

3 Tins plum tomatoes

11oz Tomato puree

5 tbsps Red wine

Eco friendly clothing
By Linda on 23/07/2009 13:49

Its pouring with rain here this afternoon luckily we took the dogs out this morning to Carbisdale which is probably the poshest Youth hostel in the world. There are lots of walks on the estate and we were lucky with the weather and only had a few drops of rain. Although its very wet its also quite wam so you feel as if you are in a presssure cooker with all the wet weather gear on. If your name happens to be Shula of course then you are wet anyway from swimming in any and all available water( for those not familiar Shula is our Flat coat Retriever). She was in luck today with both a burn and a loch!

I have been reading about the increasing popularity of buying Eco friendly products they have come down in price and there is loads more choice available these days. Whether or not you believe in global warming its indisputable that we are using up our natural resources at an alarming rate so it makes sense to choose environmentally friendly products such as organic clothing. I have he ...

Our wet weather
By Linda on 18/07/2009 16:44

Its been a pretty hectic week here and some horrible weather thrown in for good measure. Lairg has been having its annual Gala week with lots of things planned and people have soldiered on through downpours. Its what you might call the Dunkirk spirit! Today there wasto be an open air market and demonstrations from the fire station and so on and a ceildh in the Community hall. Needless to say it all had to happen in the hall but I think everybody managed to have a good time regardless of the fact that we were a bit squashed. Festivities will continue this evening with music and dancing.

All this rain has resulted in a spurt of growth in the veggie patch weeds are going forth and multiplying at an alarming rate. I am waiting for a dry period so I can go and pick my blackcurrants and we shall have some peas soon. Salad leaves have been lovely and I have put in a second sowing to keep us well supplied. Our chickens are laying well and all in all its a very productive ...

Summer holidays have started already here in Scotland and children in England will be breaking up from school in the next couple of weeks. I expect many of you will be hoping for some sunshine to make your holiday extra special but sunshine also brings the danger of sunburn. Have you thought about buying a bamboo sunshirt to help protect your little ones? They have a sun protection factor of 50+ and are nice and cool and loose fitting with a hood that pulls up to protect the back of the neck.

Think 'Safe in the sun'. You can find them here

Chicken talk
By Linda on 06/07/2009 14:53

We have been experiencing thunder and torrential rain here most of the day and I am almost paranoid about the computer since last weeks expensive blow out. Summer seems to have disappeared temporarily but hopefully it will be back soon. Our two dogs are certainly hoping so, they hate the thunder and spend their time trying to hide in cupboards when its about!

I have been reading about more than 2,500 day old chicks that were dumped and left to die in the stifling heat that we have been experiencing recently. The chicks were in boxes that had been neatly stacked in direct sunlight leaving the poor creatures to a horrible death. The RSPCA have speculated that it might have been an act of sheer laziness. You can find the full story here  It is a sad refection of some peoples total lack of concern for living creatures and unfort ...
