The Fashion Industry
By Linda on 30/09/2008 09:38
I'm early again today because we are going out later even though its raining and miserable. We have noticed here that the weather can be completely different on the coast so thats where we are headed and we will hope for the best.

I am always on the lookout for items that may be of interest and I found some interesting facts about the Fashion Industry which I thought I might share with you today they are from the Ethical Fashion Forum-

Chicken Welfare
By Linda on 29/09/2008 13:34
A lovely sunny walk today along the beach but its raining again now. I have a friend staying so cannot spend as much time as usual in front of my computer but I have been in and out of the shop updating and sending out orders so have kept busy. I have just joined 'Twitter' and am still finding my way around if anybody would like to follow me there my address is - https://twitter.com/sonesorganic

I was reading about the rising wastage from excess packaging which has risen to 10m tonnes a year. While we are on the subject did you know that a lot of 'health shops' will refill Ecover bottles I am saving mine for the next time I go to Inverness.

Tesco came under fire from Animal welfare groups in the last few days for slashing the price of whole chickens to £1.99 in a special 'bargain basement' price which makes their chickens the cheapest in the market.

How to impress a woman
By Linda on 28/09/2008 13:13
Our weather still hasn't improved and we keep hearing about the glorious sunshine in the South! Just got back from a rather damp and chilly walk for a late lunch. I thought today it was perhaps time to be a bit frivolous and I found an article about the ten best ways for men to impress women so any chaps reading this take note! Its been adapted from Sundays Independent slightly tongue in cheek perhaps but more than a little truth.

What do women want from men? Oh, not much. Adoration, eternal loyalty, and all the bathroom surfaces to ourselves. Time, babies and the moon on a string. For starters anyway. So read and learn-

  •  Ask a question or even two it shows interest.

  • Stop asking questions! There comes a time to stop preferably after you have asked all the right questions. But "Do you mind if I undo your bra?" is definitely not sexy.

The fur is flying!
By Linda on 27/09/2008 09:23
Its not a very nice day here in Lairg raining, and dull, dull dull! We are supposed to be going on a fairly short sponsored walk later and its going to be a soggy one but never mind the craic will be great.

I was reading some green news today and saw a piece about Armani introducing fur coats for babies. It has enraged PETA ( People for Ethical Treatment of Animals) and there is a war of words going on. This was after Armani last summer promised never to use fur in his collections again a mite unprincipled methinks!

The promise was not so much broken, as smashed on the floor and jumped on by Armani, who went on to include fur trims in his men's and womenswear A/W '08 collections: he also used fur in his kids and babywear ranges. Fur coats for babies!? Needless to say, PETA were not impressed...

We're not quite sure what PETA plan to do to Armani next (will his skins be appearing in a gruesome catwalk collection of their own, perhaps?), but you can be su ...

It was the worlds biggest coffee morning today and we raised over £200 which was excellent and everybody enjoyed themselves and had a good old blether as well. Attention Deficit Syndrome
By Linda on 25/09/2008 09:12
Another early day today I am off to the airport again to collect a friend who is staying this week and won't get back until early evening. I was interested in a piece on the news last night about ADS (Attention deficit syndrome) and the prescribing of Ritalin. Apparently this is being diagnosed more frequently but it has been suggested that the drug has been over prescribed.

I have been wondering whether this is another example of the pace of life in the modern world or could it be linked to diet. I decided to investigate a little and found that it has been suggested that diet can affect children with this problem.

People nowadays eat foods which were unknown to our ancestors processed foods and all the associated colourings and preservatives and so on. It has been suggested that you should change your childs diet . Avoid buying processed foods buy meat, fish, vegetables, fruits, wholewheat flour, olive oil and real ingredients such as vanilla instead of cheap flavouring ...

An Autumnal Feel
By Linda on 24/09/2008 15:42
There is a real nip in the air today and an Autumn feel. The season of lovely cosy fires and hot drinks is upon us. Where has the year gone? We had a very good summer here by Scottish highland standards but it just seems to have flown by.

Peter has been sawing fallen trees today to add to our stock of logs we try to have next years chopped and drying out well in advance. A full log store is a glorious sight! Unfortunately I cannot be of much assistance at the moment as I have problems with my left shoulder and elbow which is a shame because I love helping to collect and burn the brushwood. We are going to invest in a machine that chews it into shreds that I can recycle in the chicken shed and as mulch on the garden.

I cannot remember whether I have already told you that we took delivery of four new chickens this week. They have never been outside before and have been huddling in the chicken house I hope they are going to get a bit braver soon.

Green Gardens
By Linda on 23/09/2008 11:12
I'm an early bird today, we are going to take Mum and Dad to the airport later I can hardly believe a week has gone by already. Dad has been helping me in the garden and we have planted a row of raspberries and replanted currants and gooseberries. We have been eating vegetables fresh from the garden all week yum!

I have been reading about Kim Wilde who has just launched an initiative from the National Trust for Greener Gardens. She says " It became obvious that I needed a chemical-free garden because my children were going to be in it". She passed on a couple of tips-

  • Provide water for wildlife with a small pond or even a birdbath if you have small children to attract birds, frogs and insects to the garden. Toads, frogs and newts will eat slugs and insects will pollinate your fruit and vegetables.
  • Even if you live in a flat with no garden you can grow herbs and tomatoes on window sills or balconies.

First Frost
By Linda on 22/09/2008 16:46
We had a frost last night the first one, but a lovely bright and sunny day.I think Autumn is here its the equinox today where the hours of light are equal to the hours of darkness. The nights will begin to draw in now although its already getting dark about 7.30 pm.

I have had four new chickens delivered today and there is quite a bit of activity going on in the run with the new chickens inside the house and the older ones outside and clucking furiously. I hope they are all going to get along.

Last week I was talking about the chemicals in household cleaning products and today I was looking at some further information its from America but I think just as valid for the U.K. When you go to the supermarket, read the labels. What does earth-friendly, environmentally responsible, non-toxic, or all-natural ingredients mean? Wish you'd got a degree in chemistry? You're not the only one. The truth is—deciphering green code is NOT simple.

By Linda on 21/09/2008 16:59
Jacob is three today! I can hardly believe three years have gone by since he was born and inspired my organic website. We went to see him today and took his present a battery powered motorbike. Great Granny and Grandad had got a helmet and knee and elbow protectors. So here he is in action he got the hang of it very quickly.

And giving his little brother a ride..............
