A Short Blog and Facebook |

A day off today we decided to take the train from Lairg to Wick in Caithness a very scenic ride but also a long one! It took about 2 and a half hours each way. Lots to see along the way and it certainly brings home how come this is one of the least populated area's in Europe. Miles of wild countryside inhabited only by wild animals ,birds etc. Just an occasional dwelling house that's lived in and several that are obviously empty.
This is going to be a short blog because enforced sitting still seems to have tired me out! Would anyone care to join me on Facebook? I have a page there and also two groups Sones Organic Baby Clothes and Ethical Shopping. Any way this is the link to my page. love to see you there!

Late again! We have been to the Summer Isles today on the West coast a very beautiful place. Took the dogs onto the beach for a run and then went for a pub lunch. It's a lovely drive over there and we were lucky it kept dry all day.
Anyway enough about my lovely day out. I was reading an interesting article about colicky babies and ways that you can help. I don't expect there can be many mums that haven't had to contend with this at some time and it can be really distressing for both mum and baby. Precise causes of infantile colic are not known. The wind that babies expel during a colicky period has lead to some theories that it is due to an immature digestive tract but it has not been proved conclusively.
First and foremost is look after yourself you are not the cause of babies distress and it doesn't help if you feel anxious and upset so if you need someone else to take over to give you a break don't see it as a failure.

More on Eczema |

Hello late again! I had to go to Inverness to take my car in also had a wander around the shops with mother in law. We just got back. For my blog today I thought I might continue with thoughts on eczema and tips for living with it. There are a number of things that you can do to help minimise the itching and discomfort. Of course I am not advocating that you should always self treat it may be necessary to consult the doctor but just some idea's that may be useful.
People with eczema should avoid contact with soap, detergents and other
irritants. This means wearing rubber gloves for household and wet work,
or cotton gloves when cleaning. Always providing that rubber gloves are not a trigger!
Avoid jobs or occupations that expose their skin to
irritants, such as hairdressing, catering, mechanical engineering and
perhaps nursing, especially if eczema affects the hands.
Reduce the population of house dust mites in the home by regular
dusting and vacuum ...

Feathered Houdini's and Eczema |

Stop press! Two of the feathered houdini's managed to get out of the run today for the first time. For those who are new to this blog I am referring to my chickens who were the scourge of my garden constantly escaping from their run and trashing the vegetables and flowers eating all in their path. A couple of months ago they got a new run and peace has reined until today. I shall have to check the perimeters I've obviously become too complacent!
I have been itching today from midge bites and thinking about my new article and in the course of my research (and itching) thought about eczema which I used to suffer from. While the precise cause of eczema is unclear it seems to be a hyperactive response from the immune system to an irritant. Frequently occuring with allergies and often with a family history. Elimination of known triggers is an important factor in symptom management.

Cashew Nutters |

Another week gone by and Summer is marching on, we are still light here until about 10pm but it seems like yesterday that it was light about 20 hours out of 24 hours. It must be my advanced age that makes time seem to pass so quickly! Everybody must be going on holiday at the moment because I am doing a brisk trade in sunhats and don't have very many left now.
After all my talk about healthy eating over the past couple of days I thought I might share a recipe with you today. It comes highly recommended and they are lovely for handing round with drinks but I can tell you from personal experience that they are moreish and disappear fast. You can make them in a food processor so they are really quick and easy.
Cashew Nutters
3 oz Cheddar Cheese 4oz Soft Margarine (Olive spread would be slightly less naughty) 2oz Semolina 3 1/2 oz S.R. Flour Salt Freshly ground black pepper 1/2 Tsp. Dr ...

Additives and Summer Gala's |

Only a small shower so far today so we ventured out to Shinn Falls which is owned by Harrods. I took the dogs for a walk while mother in law had a look at the shop. There seems to be Gala's going on in all the small villages locally so quite a bit happening up here at the moment but it is mostly fairly dependent on some dry weather. The Gala's are very much aimed at families with processions, sports and entertainments.
After my post yesterday about healthy eating I thought that I might stay on this theme a bit longer. I have been reading about food additives, we apparently eat up to two kilograms of them in a year which is a pretty horrifying thought. There are lots of them
in conventional food, less in organic
food, and they may be making your kids hyperactive.
I’m not talking about pesticide residues,
but food additives. Additives in org ...

What is a healthy diet? |

Hello again from a very wet Scottish Highlands, it has been pouring most of the day so far a bit of a shock after all the nice weather we have been having but the garden needs it. I am now picking peas and seem to have a very good crop coming along. I had planned to be picking blackcurrants this weekend but unfortunately the birds pipped me to the post. I kept saying I would net them but didn't get around to it!
I have been moaning lately because all my waistbands are getting tight and my trousers are only OK if I remain standing! So I'm thinking seriously about cutting down on cakes and biscuits which are my main downfall. Anyway I found some interesting information about a healthy diet by a top nutritionist and thought I would share it with you.

at least four servings of vegetables and three
servings of fresh fruit every day< ...

GM Cotton not quite as successful as it promised to be ? |

Well I have to say yesterdays Rhubarb and orange cake was really nice! If anybody wants the recipe just leave me a message. We have been to Dunrobin castle today its a bit like a fairytale castle with turrets sitting just back from the foreshore at Golspie. Mother in law enjoyed it and we were lucky with the weather too.
I have been reading an article about GM cotton in India and how it has not been as successful as it first appeared to be although this has been disputed by the biotechnology company Monsanto. Costs to farmers have escalated.
When cotton farmers first began using pesticides did well. They got high yields and enjoyed
a real increase in income. But then problems arose. The hybrid cotton
proved susceptible to pests and diseases, and it was not uncommon for
farmers to spray their fields up to 30 times in a single season.
Production costs went through the roof and farmers got trapped in debt.
They became desperate for a technical fix, and Bt (ge ...

Over exposure to electromagnetic fields |

I've just been making a rhubarb and orange cake for our pud tonight I hope it tastes as good as it looks! I thought before I go and get involved elsewhere it would be a good time to come and chat.
I have been reading a rather alarming article about the association of increased exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMF) in cell phones and other sources including power lines. A recent study in America documents scientific evidence that links childhood leukemia to
exposure to power lines as well as brain tumors and Alzheimer’s disease
associated with the prolonged use of cell and cordless phones. For at least the last two years, scientists have warned about health
impacts caused when people are exposed to electromagnetic radiation and
cautioned the existing safety limits are actually too high and need to
be lowered.
There is evidence that EMF is a risk factor for both childhood and
adult cancers,” said public health expert and co-editor of the Report
Dr. David Carpenter ...

Crude Oil is a finite resource |

Had you given up on me? I just got back from picking up my Mother in law from Inverness Airport she has come to stay with us for a couple of weeks. This may well be a short blog tonight I want some food!
I received an email from America this morning from a lady who wanted me to share her blog with you and she sent me a link. I had a look and thought that you might be interested so click here if you would like to check it out.
I also found a very interesting and thought provoking piece in Ethical Pulse by David North about the oil situation. Here is Lord
Oxburgh, former Chair of Shell: "Today I believe is the end of cheap
energy. It's essential that we move away from fossil fuels as fast as
possible. The boat is sinking and we have to do everything we can to
plug the hole."
