When is that baby going to arrive?
Linda's Highland Blog By Linda on 30/04/2008 15:33
A bit of a murky day here with intermittent rain. I waited all morning for my hire van to be collected and when nobody arrived phoned only to be told that they were coming tomorrow. Not a problem, but I was waiting to go out and a phone call would have been appreciated! I'm beginning to sound like Victor Meldrew but honestly!! Any way I finally got out and went to see Sian and Jacob. Poor Sian is still waiting for the baby to put in an appearance I think it must be too comfy and not keen to move out. Can't wait to see Jacob's reaction when he is presented with a brother or sister I hope he won't be too jealous, we will just have to try and make sure he understands how special he is as well.

When I was at the Baby Show I collected names for a news letter and did a small survey to try and find out about my customers. I found that about 95% of respondents were in the 30-39 age group, were regular internet shoppers and bought other organic products. Not too much of a surprise but very interesti ...

Tips for Organic Gardeners
Linda's Highland Blog By Linda on 29/04/2008 17:07
I'm still trying to get back to normal after the weekend. I still have stock taking and unpacking to do and am catching up on correspondence. It's amazing how a few days seems to require major catch up operations. I took the dogs for a walk up to the forestry today, there seemed to be cuckoo's everywhere. I love to hear the cuckoo it always makes me feel that summer is really on the way. Shopping this afternoon unless we want to starve. No news re the baby yet Sian is getting pretty fed up waiting. I dare say he or she will arrive soon. I bought a really nice book for Jacob from Lucy at www.bargainbooks4kids.com all about the house in mummy's tummy. Check out her site she has some good buys.

I have found some really useful tips from the Soil Association about growing your own vegetables and I thought it might be useful to print them here. I am about to start planting and I expect some of you are too so it seemed timely.

I'm Back!
Linda's Highland Blog By Linda on 28/04/2008 17:04
Hello everybody sorry for the long absence I was not able to get connected to the website while I was at the show. I've missed talking to you every day! I'm happy to report that Sones had a very successful time at the show and met lots of lovely people. It was nerve wracking  to say the least driving to Glasgow. I was driving  a van for the first time and it had gears. I've been driving an automatic for some time. But anyway we arrived all in one piece!

Loads of people at the show as you would expect, I have never seen so many pregnant women under one roof before! Lots of interest in organic which was really nice and many comments about the quality and softness of the material. I did very good sales of sunhats there seemed to be loads of lucky folk heading for sunny climes for their hols! I should have some pictures to post when I get a bit organised. It is all very hectic at the moment because Sian my daughter in law is due to have the baby anytime and I am going to help ...

I'm off early tomorrow.
Linda's Highland Blog By Linda on 23/04/2008 14:10
After all the planning and disasters I am finally leaving tomorrow for the show in Glasgow. My brain is completely scrambled at the moment and I am not concentrating on anything very well. Some unkind people might say "no change there then!" Anyway the van is packed and ready and I just have to put my case in tomorrow. I'm not sure what will be happening re the blog for the next few days but I will make every effort to stay in contact and give you all progress reports. This is of course assuming that you want to know! I have had lots of lovely phone calls from people wishing me luck today which is lovely and really encouraging.

I was watching the news item last night about the chap who got a criminal conviction for over loading his rubbish bin. I am not sure what the rights and wrongs are of this particular case but it did strike me as a bit of a hammer to crack a nut. My feeling is that we should firstly tackle the culprits who help produce the  rubbish that gets discard ...

Cloth Nappy Tips
Linda's Highland Blog By Linda on 22/04/2008 13:31
I thought I would get here early again today as this is not turning into one of my better days! I am off to Glasgow on Thursday as I'm sure you are probably sick of hearing about by now! But this morning disaster struck! A very good friend of mine was planning to fly to Inverness tomorrow to come with me to the show to help but unfortunately her husband is unwell in hospital and she is unable to come. I am so sorry that he is unwell and of course her place is with him. I must admit to feeling pretty devastated about my own situation as well how on earth could I manage on my own?. Fortunately another friend has stepped into the breach phew!!

Apparently it's cloth nappy week so I have put in a few tips to help minimise energy use
  • Use A rated washing appliances I know they are more expensive but could end up saving you money in the long run.
  • Wash soiled nappies at 60 degrees not 90 this is quite adequate.

It's Monday and I'm early!
Linda's Highland Blog By Linda on 21/04/2008 12:25
It's Monday and it's still morning and I'm here already. How efficient is that? Lovely day outside I'm about packed now it looks like we are moving house in my office/storeroom. I hope I haven't forgotten anything. It's very exciting at the moment but a bit full on. Sian's baby is due on Sunday when I am at the show so I expect I will be racing home to see the new baby. We don't know the sex so it will be a surprise. A sister for Jacob would be lovely but I'm sure a brother would be just as welcomed and loved. Can't wait (I don't think Sian can either!) its no fun being 9 months pregnant is it?

I wanted to share with you a great tip I read on a forum, shred all your magazines and then use them for packing if you are sending out parcels. I might give it a try but perhaps it's not so good for clothing? Although I have bought in packaging I also reuse stuff that gets sent to me so if you find that you get bubble wrap for example be assured that I would not purchase it but am simply p ...

Life in the fast lane too much for an oldie!
Linda's Highland Blog By Linda on 20/04/2008 16:09
My day off ! I seem to be living life in the fast lane lately and I'm too old for it! Late night after I got through baby sitting but at least the kids were really good. I have spent most of the day continuing with my stock sheet and price list and packing and am definitely goggle eyed. We have just got back from a very long walk, beautiful sunshine I had to carry my coat it was so warm.  I foolishly suggested a detour off the path which took us through peat bogs and mossy tussocks it was exhausting, but you know how it is when you get so far you can't face turning back I was convinced we were nearly there which proved not to be the case! Doh! I should be thin and ultra fit but I'm not why is that? Could it have anything to do with the large piece of cake and cuppa I had when we got back? It's so unfair why do I enjoy eating so much!

I was interested to see that the BBC has launched a new online ethical magazine called Thread its about ethical fashion it suggests that caring about ...

Busy busy busy!
Linda's Highland Blog By Linda on 19/04/2008 16:26
What a busy day! Kicked off this morning early sorting out cats and chickens before taking Shula for her obedience classes .Then on to Strathpeffer to  collect some soap I had ordered for the show. Next stopped off on the way home to give both dogs a good walk to hopefully wear them out a bit not to mention me!

I have spent the whole afternoon checking off items that are being packed to take with me to the show(my entire life seems to be revolving around it!). Boxes and cases surround me and I can hardly get into my office. I'm beginning to wonder if the van I have hired will be big enough! Stopping now before I become completely boggle eyed. I am baby sitting for our neighbour tonight so I hope the kids will be good because I plan on a long snooze. Well I'm afraid I don't have anything very interesting to talk about today my mind is full of packing and planning so I will sign off and hope I'm a bit more lively tomorrow!

A few more comments on Fairtrade
Linda's Highland Blog By Linda on 18/04/2008 16:59
Late again! I have been out being 'orientated' for my bank nursing job on the community. All very confusing driving up into the hills down country roads etcetera, I suppose I will find my way? Anyway is was a beautiful day and everywhere looked bonny.

A litttle bit of controversy for you re Fairtrade! Apparently one of the fore runners in producing a Fairtrade coffee was Nestle which was fine except that they are one of the most boycotted companies in the world due to aggressive marketing of baby milk formula in third world countries where mothers were encouraged to believe it superior to breast milk. Unfortunately many of them did not have clean water to mix it with and the result was an increased infant mortality rate.Nestle's chairman apparently suggested that people who say that access to a clean water supply is a fundamental human right are 'extremists'. A bit embarrassing!!

A spokesman from Fairtrade however although admitting that this had caused controversy defen ...

Fairtrade or Freetrade ?
Linda's Highland Blog By Linda on 17/04/2008 18:22
Very late getting here today, I have been hunting DIY stores in Inverness all day buying the last few bits and pieces for the baby show. I'm almost ready if the tables arrive by Tuesday as has been promised. It's been a really lovely day again here sunny and apart from a cold wind this morning quite warm.

I have just been reading some very interesting but diverse opinions on world trade. Firstly from somebody who totally disagrees with the Fair trade system which he says chains poor peasant farmers to the land when they don't want to be there (not sure how he knows this!). He suggests that many farm workers prefer to go and work in factories and be exploited. People who buy Fairtrade are simply salving their consciences at the expense of poor farmers. His arguement is that we should scrap farm subsidies immediately and simply grow whatever thrives best in a particular climate. The US for example are producing cotton at a loss due to the subsidies thereby denying the third world an opportun ...
